Intermediary holding companies, or legal entities whose main function is to own and control other subsidiaries, help multinational firms by defining organizational boundaries more clearly in a nearly decomposable modular structure.
By examining the managerial dual assignments among subsidiaries and between headquarters and subsidiaries, we show that control and coordination are more intense between subsidiaries owned by the same holding companies, and less intense between subsidiaries across the boundaries of holding companies.
We further find evidence that such dual assignment patterns are more intense for subsidiaries in industries characterized by high intangible asset intensity and in host countries with strong institutions. This study shows that holding companies are more than mere tax avoidance vehicles, with results that can offer insight into managing complex organizations.

Building on the ‘entrepreneuring as emancipation’ perspective, I explore the emancipatory potential of social entrepreneurship as a means to disengage individuals enthralled to ideology and trapped by their own past behavior.
I studied two former religious-based terrorists from Indonesia, and their social enterprise, a cafe chain, which has successfully emancipated 10 ex-terrorists.
In this paper, I show how engagement in entrepreneurship can be emancipatory through allowing individuals not only to escape some ideological constraints but also to con-struct new meaning in life and new social roles and connections
that provide a platform for building a new future.
Importantly, because social entrepreneurship as a form of organizing permits autonomy from an exclusive focus on profitability, it afforded the entrepreneurs I studied to achieve a degree of emancipation both for themselves
and also for those they served.
My results also have substantial practical value in elucidating a potentially valuable tool in efforts to reduce terrorist violence. I develop a grounded process model of social entrepreneurship as emancipatory work to summarize the study and offer avenues for future research.

            要 旨
It is well known even intuitively that novelties destined to subvert the established way of doing things in a given world are often pushed forward by innovators who reside at the periphery of ? and at times even outside ? that world. The journey of novelty from the margins to the core is as captivating as it is troubling to decode. On the one hand, peripheral innovators stand apart from the norms of their eras. Being less tied to the conventions to which insiders tend to conform, they may recognize solutions that escape incumbents’ attention. Yet the paradox is that the same social position that helps peripherals to pursue imaginative projects that depart from prevailing social and cognitive categories also constrains their ability to obtain support and recognition for their innovations: they lack crucial markers of credibility, social ties to insiders, and most notably, expert authority. What processes allow peripheral actors to stake out some ground in the insiders’ own terrain, especially when their claims to novelty clash with the status quo? Our goal in this talk is to offer an overview of some of the central theoretical and analytical insights we have been developing in our attempt at decoding the journey of novelty. After sharing some central findings of our collaborative research, we will conclude by presenting one project currently in progress that focuses on micro mechanisms of novelty framing based on an experimental approach.

Gains from specialization in multi-unit R&D organization: Influence of knowledge overlap, internal competition, and hierarchy

          要 旨
The division of innovative labor across R&D units and the integration of specialized knowledge in the pursuit of technological breakthroughs present R&D managers with complex set of choices that involve trade-offs. Using a dataset of 84519 patents granted to 189 pharmaceutical firms across 36 years, we apply deep learning techniques to provide a rich characterization of heterogeneity in R&D organization that arises from the interaction of a unit’s specialization and its knowledge overlap with other units. We study whether formal hierarchical coordination mechanisms moderate the trade-offs from this interaction. Our results suggest that a unit’s knowledge overlap with other units can mute its gains from specialization. A hierarchical intervention can be used to manage the challenges created by redundancies and internal competition between specialized units.

          要 旨
How can firms capture the returns from the technological knowledge they create?
Though a considerable body of strategy research has explored mechanisms that support such appropriation, this has typically focused on exogenous institutional factors such as the effectiveness of patent and contract enforcement, the presence of complementary assets, or the firm’s location decisions. Little attention has been paid to the role of internal firm structures in supporting appropriation. In this paper, we focus on the role of intrafirm inventor network structure.
Drawing on social network theory, we propose that organizations whose inventor networks are more connected enjoy greater appropriation of returns to innovation through faster follow-on innovation relative to their rivals.
Using patent data on nearly 1,400 large corporations over 33 years, we find evidence consistent with our hypotheses.

          要 旨
Recognizing and properly dealing with strategic issues is central to firm performance. While research has highlighted that strategic issues can be categorized as ‘opportunities’ or ‘threats’, results are inconclusive about the impact of issue categorization on performance. Studies on issue categorization and the distribution of threats to opportunities further lack a longitudinal perspective. To address these concerns, we conducted a process study of six race teams and their trajectories in a multi-competitor (fleet) sailing race. By analyzing their threat to opportunity categorization over time, we shed light on how teams categorize strategic issues and its subsequent impact on performance. We find that organizations, which have a high ratio of threats-to-opportunities, i.e. are ‘imbalanced’ over time, show poorer performance. By shifting the level of analysis, from isolated and single strategic issues to an aggregated issue categorization perspective during an entire trajectory, we enhance our understanding of the effects of issue categorization. Our study contributes to strategic issue management literature, by offering novel insights on the categorization over time as well on its link to performance.

Reflecting on death amidst COVID-19: Different trajectories and its impact on creativity thru four-wave longitudinal investigation

          要 旨
The current COVID-19 pandemic has claimed thousands of lives all across the globe, making death more salient to many of us who may not have been readily cognizant of such fate. Even though employees in certain occupations routinely deal with the idea of death or mortality, it is not always the case that regular employees in other occupations are made aware of their own mortality. In the current study, using four-wave longitudinal data collected weekly during the initial peak of COVID-19 infections in the United States?during late-June to late-July?we examine how employees interpret and react to death reflection over time and whether or not death reflection is related to creativity. Conducting latent class growth analysis on four-wave longitudinal data obtained from 592 full-time employees, we find four different patterns of mortality salience (death reflection), which are predicted by age, gender, and exercise in an anticipated yet complex manner. In addition, the four trajectories relate differentially to employee creativity. We offer timely, valuable implications for theory and practice.

Do University Entrepreneurship Programs Promote Entrepreneurship?

          講 師:Charles Eesley氏(Associate Professor, Stanford University,Department of Management Science & Engineering)
